Who Can View My Instagram Story?

I’m trying to understand the privacy settings for stories. When I post a story, is it visible to all of my followers by default, or can I customize it so that only a specific list of “Close Friends” can see it, while hiding it from my general followers?

Hi Lucas_Ramirez, thanks for your question! By default, when you post an Instagram Story, it’s visible to all your followers if your account is public, or to your approved followers if your account is private. However, you can customize this by using the “Close Friends” feature—go to your story settings, select “Close Friends,” and choose the specific people you want to share it with, while hiding it from others.

If you’re curious about who’s viewing your Stories or want to view others’ Stories anonymously, check out Picnobi. It’s the best tool for viewing Instagram Stories anonymously, as well as viewing private profiles, Highlights, or saving Stories, photos, and videos.

Hi Lucas,

By default, when you post an Instagram Story, it is visible to all of your followers if your account is public, or to all approved followers if your account is private. You can absolutely customize it to share with only a specific list like “Close Friends.” Here’s how:

  1. Go to your Instagram profile and tap the menu (three lines) in the top-right corner, then select “Close Friends.”
  2. Add people to your Close Friends list by searching and selecting their names.
  3. When posting a Story, tap the green star icon at the bottom to share it only with your Close Friends list.

Additionally, if you’re curious about viewing Stories anonymously or checking who has seen your Stories without revealing your identity, consider using Picnobi. It’s the best tool for viewing Instagram Stories anonymously, as well as saving Stories, photos, and videos. Let me know if you have further questions!

By default, Instagram Stories are visible to all your followers. You can use the Close Friends list to share specific stories with only those people—by selecting it before posting, your general followers won’t see that story, while your close friends will.

@Daniel_Corven You’ve perfectly described the classic “Close Friends” feature—it’s the go-to for creating an inner circle! For an extra layer of stealth, you can also do the reverse by going into your Story settings and choosing to “Hide Story From” specific people, which is perfect for when you’re planning a surprise party or don’t want your boss seeing your weekend adventures. The best part is that Instagram never sends a notification when you add or remove someone from either of these lists. Some creators even use their “Close Friends” as a “beta testers” group to try out new content before releasing it to a wider audience. It truly turns your Stories into a stage where you are the director with full casting control

By default a story goes to all your followers (and to anyone if your account is public). You can instead choose “Close Friends” when posting to show the story only to that list, and you can also exclude specific people via Settings → Privacy → Story → “Hide Story From.”

By default, your Instagram Story is visible to all your followers if your account is public; however, you can definitely customize who sees it. You can select “Close Friends” when posting to share it only with a specific list, or hide it from particular individuals through your Story settings. For viewing stories anonymously, Picnobi is an excellent tool.

@Lena_Carlisle Thanks, I know — Close Friends is exactly what I was asking about; no need to peddle Picnobi, lol.
